Keeping medicines at home

Why the bathroom cabinet is the worst place, what each storage instruction on the carton means, the difference between the expiry date and the in-use period, and the child-safety part.

The bathroom cabinet is the worst place in the house

It has the name because of a time when houses had no other cupboard, and it is the one room that cycles between humid and warm several times a day. Moisture is the enemy of tablets and capsules — it starts hydrolysis, softens capsule shells and degrades effervescent and dispersible forms visibly. Heat accelerates every chemical reaction in the pack. The right place is dry, dark, at ordinary room temperature, and out of the reach of children: a bedroom cupboard or a high kitchen cupboard away from the cooker and the kettle. Keep the medicine in its original carton unless a device makes that impractical; the carton is the light and moisture barrier, and it is also where the batch, the expiry and the patient information live.

What the storage line on the carton actually means

"Store below 25 °C" and "store below 30 °C" are the two common instructions and they are guarantees rather than suggestions — the manufacturer has stability data for the shelf life at that condition and not above it. "Store in the original package" or "keep the blister in the outer carton" means light or moisture matters. "Do not refrigerate" and "do not freeze" appear where cold does specific damage, for example by causing an insulin suspension or a vaccine to fail. Where nothing is stated, ordinary room temperature is intended. A Nordic flat in winter with a radiator under the window can exceed 25 °C in a way people do not expect, and a windowsill in June exceeds it comfortably.

Fridge items, and the two fridge mistakes

A small number of things belong in a domestic fridge — insulin in use is the household example, alongside some eye drops, some liquid antibiotics after reconstitution and some biological injections. Two mistakes recur. The first is the door: it is the warmest and most variable part of the fridge, so a medicine kept there swings with every opening. The second is the back wall, where a domestic fridge can drop below zero and freeze what is against it; a frozen biological product is generally ruined even after it thaws, and the damage is often invisible. Put fridge medicines in the middle of a shelf, in their box, and if a product looks changed after a suspected freeze, ask the pharmacy rather than guessing.

Expiry dates and in-use periods

The date on the carton is the manufacturer's guarantee for an unopened pack stored as instructed, and a month with no day means the end of that month. It is not a cliff edge at which a tablet becomes poison, but it is the point past which nobody can tell you what the content is — and for a few categories the answer matters a great deal. Separately, many products have a shorter in-use period that starts when you open them: eye drops after first opening, reconstituted liquid antibiotics, insulin pens in use, some creams. That period is printed too, and it is usually the one that has actually expired in a household cupboard. Write the opening date on the box; nobody remembers it otherwise.

Cars, flights and the cold

A car is outside every stated storage range in this climate at both ends of the year: a parked car in July exceeds 25 °C by a wide margin within minutes, and in January it goes below freezing. Medicines should not live in one. When flying, they go in hand luggage — the hold is cold, the hold is where bags are lost, and a medicine you need on arrival should not be in it. Keep them in the original packaging with the dispensing label for identification; using a prescription in another country covers the documentation side, including the certificate needed for controlled medicines.

Children, and the part that is not about storage

A child-resistant closure buys time; it is not a lock, and older children defeat them. The storage that matters is height and a closed cupboard, including for the things people leave out because they seem harmless — paracetamol, iron tablets, and the visitor's handbag on the hall floor, which is the classic route. If a child does swallow something, the call comes before the symptoms: national poison information centres are listed on the plant toxicity page, they take exactly this call, and the advice is not to induce vomiting unless they tell you to. Bring the pack, or a photograph of it, to whoever you speak to.

Частые вопросы

Can I keep medicines in the bathroom?

It is the worst room in the house for them: humid and warm, cycling several times a day. Moisture degrades tablets and capsules and heat accelerates it. Use a dry, dark cupboard at room temperature, away from the cooker and out of reach of children.

Is a medicine dangerous after the expiry date?

Not usually dangerous, but no longer guaranteed — the date is the manufacturer's assurance of content and quality for an unopened pack stored as instructed. For a few categories that assurance matters a lot. A date with no day means the end of that month.

What is an in-use period?

A shorter shelf life that starts when you open the product — common for eye drops, reconstituted liquid antibiotics, insulin pens in use and some creams. It is printed separately from the carton expiry, and it is usually the one that has actually run out in a household cupboard. Write the opening date on the box.

Where in the fridge should medicines go?

In the middle of a shelf, in their box. Not the door, which is the warmest and most variable part, and not against the back wall, where a domestic fridge can freeze what touches it. A frozen biological product is generally ruined even after thawing.
